Discussion:
[cc-devel] HTML validation of 4.0 licenses

The HTML for the 4.0 licenses as published doesn't validate correctly.
While it should currently display as intended for all browsers we're
aware of, we are planning to correct the files so that they do
validate--which requires that we make a change to the published files.

It is a best practice that the HTML validates, for many reasons, many
of which are given here: http://validator.w3.org/docs/why.html

We think it is important that everyone reading the legal code sees it
correctly, now and in the future, as small things like section
numbering and formatting can be significant. A few months ago we set
out a policy for what is and isn't legal code:
http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Legal_code

We believe this falls under the category of things that are not
considered legal code. However, this type of change isn't mentioned
specifically in the policy, and so we will be adding it to the list as
"HTML and other coding that does not change the user's view of legal
code elements". (We will also note the change to the files as a
footnote on the errata page.)

If you're currently producing a translation starting from the version
of 4.0 as published, we recommend that you check your completed files
against the corrected version when it is available, as we will be
requiring that the files validate before publication.

Corrected files are now up on our staging site and will replace the
existing pages next Tuesday:

http://staging.creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode
http://staging.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode
http://staging.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode
http://staging.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/legalcode
http://staging.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/legalcode
http://staging.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode

(With thanks to Gisle Hannemyr from CC Norway, who produced a template
for the new files.)

If you spot any new errors not present in the pages as originally
published, please let us know by next Monday! (If you spot any old
errors that exist in both versions, please also let us know so that we
can note the error.)

Hi,

There seems to be an error still in the BY license deed, see?http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fstaging.creativecommons.org%2Flicenses%2Fby%2F4.0%2Flegalcode&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&ss=1&group=0&verbose=1&user-agent=W3C_Validator%2F1.3+http%3A%2F%2Fvalidator.w3.org%2Fservices:

These lines:

<!-- <p class="shaded"><a name="languages">Additional languages available</a>: ?Please read the <a href="//wiki.creative.commons.org/FAQ">FAQ</a> for more information about official translations. ? -->

</p>

Should be

<!-- <p class="shaded"><a name="languages">Additional languages available</a>: ?Please read the <a href="//wiki.creative.commons.org/FAQ">FAQ</a> for more information about official translations. ??

</p>?>

the closing </p> needs to be in the commented section.

The others check out in the validator.

I haven?t looked at the content of the pages.

Best,

Maarten

Thank Kat, no problem.

You didn?t fix it on the staging server right? The link I provided still shows the same error.
