Discussion:
[cc-devel] [GSOC 2011] Getting Involve

Hi,

I am a final year undergraduate from department of Computer Science and
Engineering University of Moratuwa.
I am interested in doing a project of CC for Google summer of code this
year.

After going through the ideas list I am very much interested of the
idea *Attribution
Helper Browser Extension.

**I am very much familiar with Firefox and chrome extension development. The
extensions which I have created for Firefox has been accepted by the Mozilla
community after reviewing the code[1].
So I am very much confident that I have the ability to work on the
Chrome/Firefox extension.*

Can some one please suggests me a starting point to work on this project.

Hi Isuru,
How would your extension be different from OpenAttribute<http://openattribute.com/>
?
I was about to ask the same question.
I tested the openAttribute extension on Firefox and found that almost all
the feature requests given in the project description is implemented in
openAttribute. But in the project description says that we need to improve
the openAttribute.
I am not clear about what needs to be done in this project.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Isuru,
please don't bump the threads on mailing list. I'm sure mentors
subscribed to the list got your message, but because it's weekend the
response will likely come only on Monday.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Isuru,

Sorry for the delayed reply; we're currently moving the CC office,
which has caused some delays in, well, getting things done.

I think that a successful project will build on OpenAttribute, but we
don't have specific ideas about what needs to be changed/improved.
We're really interested in students who are passionate about CC and
who have an idea of how to bring CC to other platforms or tools.

Thanks for the information.

You mean we have to propose a project which we can use bring CC to other
tools/ platforms. As far as I see Open Attribute has all the requirement
specified in the project idea. If I found any other way to improve the Open
Attribute extension can I submit a proposal based on the same idea?

Yes! Thinking about it a little more, I know that OpenAttribute
currently has different javascript for Opera, Chrome, and Firefox.
It'd be great to see those unified so that it gives consistent output
across platforms. That's probably not enough on its own for GSoC, but
maybe it's a starting point?

Hi,

I went through the OpenAttribute extension carefully but I couldn't find a
signification improvement to done which suits to a GSOC project.
If you have any further improvements needs done to OpenAttribute, please let
me know.

Since of the above reason I am thinking of selecting some other idea to work
on.

I thought "Improving LibreOffice/OpenOffice plugin" project idea is suitable
for a GSOC project since there are lists of bugs needs to be fixed and new
features to be implemented.

Thank you

Thanks for the information.

Attribute extension can I submit a proposal based on the same idea?
Yes! Thinking about it a little more, I know that OpenAttribute
currently has different javascript for Opera, Chrome, and Firefox.
It'd be great to see those unified so that it gives consistent output
across platforms.
Sorry I didn't get the idea.
As far as I know, for different browsers we need to have different
javascripts because different browser API to create extensions are not

same.
Right, but there are portions -- RDFa extraction, attribution
generation, etc -- that could be unified.
OK. I got the point. I will try to find any other improvements that needs
to be done.

That's probably not enough on its own for GSoC, but
maybe it's a starting point?

Hi Isuru,
Sorry for the delayed reply; we're currently moving the CC office,
which has caused some delays in, well, getting things done.
I think that a successful project will build on OpenAttribute, but
we

don't have specific ideas about what needs to be changed/improved.
We're really interested in students who are passionate about CC and
who have an idea of how to bring CC to other platforms or tools.

Hi Isuru,
How would your extension be different from OpenAttribute?
I was about to ask the same question.
I tested the openAttribute extension on Firefox and found that
almost

openAttribute. But in the project description says that we need to
improve
the openAttribute.
I am not clear about what needs to be done in this project.
Cheers,
Chris
